Attribution (UTM)
When a visitor clicks through from a widget on your site and signs up for DealSize, that sign-up should be attributed to you. This page explains how attribution works and what you must do to make it reliable.
Pass data-utm-source explicitly
<script
src="https://www.dealsize.ai/dealsize-widget.js"
async
data-widget="news"
data-symbol="EURUSD"
data-utm-source="yourdomain.com"
></script>
The value should identify your site or organization. Your domain name is the recommended convention.
When set, outbound links from the widget to the DealSize app carry utm_source=yourdomain.com together with a widget-specific utm_campaign (for example news_widget), and the attribution is persisted through the sign-up flow.
Why the referrer is not enough
It is tempting to assume the widget can read document.referrer inside its iframe and discover your domain automatically. In practice this is unreliable:
- The
Referrer-Policyyour site (or your CDN) sends controls what, if anything, the iframe sees. The modern default,strict-origin-when-cross-origin, truncates the referrer to the bare origin, and stricter policies such asno-referrerremove it entirely. - Privacy-focused browsers and extensions strip or spoof cross-origin referrers regardless of your headers.
- Referrers disappear on subsequent in-widget navigation.
Because any of these silently produces an empty or wrong referrer, referrer-based attribution can lose sign-ups you should have been credited for. The explicit data-utm-source attribute is immune to all of the above.
Support per widget
| Widget | Attribution today |
|---|---|
| News | data-utm-source: supported, always pass it |
| Trading Signals | Outbound promo links carry widget campaign parameters |
| Economic Calendar | Currently derived from the iframe referrer, with the limitations above |
If your embed URL carries no explicit source and the browser strips the referrer, sign-ups from your site cannot be credited to you. When in doubt, include data-utm-source. Unsupported parameters are ignored harmlessly, so it is always safe to pass.
